Rich started training in the martial arts in 1973 learning Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. Rich later wrestled Varsity at both Clifton High School and Montclair Start College/University in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Both teams were powerhouses in New Jersey and won too many titles to list. In the late 1980’s Rich started his training with World Grand Master Tiger Yang. GrandMaster Yang was a multiple heavy weight world fighting titleholder as well as a movie and T.V. Kung Fu action star in Asia. It was with World Grand Master Tiger Yang that Rich learned the very special and effective blend of Karate, Kung Fu and Tae Kwan Do that Tiger Yang created and later earned a candidate Black Belt. In 1996 Rich started a seven year intensive program of Aikido, the art that uses the energy of an attacker against himself culminating in a hard earned Black Belt. In 2002 Rich started learning the art of Krav Maga. This is an effective art that is taught to over 500 police departments, swat teams, and the military programs the world over. After completing all of the basic instructor phases (Each phase is 8 hours per day for seven straight days) Rich completed three additional Expert Phases in gun, stick and knife defenses as well. Rich has also studied under Eyal Yanilov, the highest level Krav Maga instructor in the world who’s rank was given directly by Imi Lichtenfeld – the creator of Krav Maga. During this time Rich became involved with Greg Silva founder of Premier Martial Arts and UP and Barry Van Over. Barry under Greg’s direction developed a system that combine the best of various martial arts. Karate, Krav Maga, BJJ and Kali. Rich was one of the founding members of Premier Martial Arts and earned his Black Belt in this very effective self defense system that is heavy in Krav Maga and BJJ. Rich is no longer part of Premier MA, but is proud of his time with Premier MA and is thankful for his training in both business and martial arts from both Greg and Barry. Due to Krav Maga adding ground work in the KM curriculum Rich started learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006 with Gracie Barra -the family that brought Brazilian Ju-Jitsu to the United States. With Rich’s prior wrestling background jiu-jitsu was a natural for him. He was asked to bring Jiu-Jitsu to the Inland Empire as on official licensee for a few years. Rich won the 2008 No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, and the U.S. Nationals Gi and No-Gi Championships for his age, weight, and rank.

Meredith is a great example of someone that didn’t do martial arts their whole life before coming to Krav Maga and now she is one of our certified Krav Maga instructors! For a number of years Meredith would watch movies and TV showing martial arts and the a desire to learn took hold. She first started training in boxing, Judo, Muay Thai and then after being injured in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Meredith was looking for a realistic self defense system that taught self defense from knives and guns. After searching the internet she found Krav Maga and then a friend mentioned Krav Maga.
Krav offered a sense of pride and accomplishment that I did not get from Boxing and BJJ. I’m a lifer now!
